The Empire had conquered all of the known world, and the Emperor wanted to become a god like his ancestors. That could only be accomplished by great conquests. He has sent fleets across the Sea of Storms, but the way is too dangerous. Only one in ten ships survive the passage. No great army could survive the travel.
So he had some of his Wizards look at crossing the rift between worlds through their magic. They found a doorway, and opened it. Now that door can never be closed. The Elder Gods have a way into this world.
No one alive knows the names or goals of the Elder Gods. There must have been more then one. There are reports of minions fighting other minions. There were reports of fire in the skies. Water turning into blood. Air turning into poison. The Earth shuddered with fear. And Madness burning the minds straight out of every man woman and child who glimpsed an Elder God.
