Name: Ifreanti (Ih-free-on-tee)
Appearance: The Ifreanti stand tall and strong, with an average racial height of 7'3", scales covering their bodies ranging a wide array of colors, and a pair of strong wings. Their hands bear five fingers, but end in vicious claws, with an opposable thumb. Their feet end in four claws, hooked for gripping and holding prey. An Ifreanti may have their wings clipped for a crime, becoming renamed immediately as Obtha, or 'Dishonored.' They forfeit all rights, possessions, privileges, and mates.
Government/Organization: The Ifreanti are led by a single male, the Zmaj, the position being won by a trial by combat between the challenger and the current Zmaj. Required trials are held every year. The most powerful members of the Ifreanti may challenge the Zmaj at any time, although he is free to decline these particular challenges. The current Zmaj is Avatre Obsidius.
Population: The Ifreanti are rumored to be around 600-800 strong at the time. Although an official census has never been held, numbers were believed to be around 3,000 at their prime. There are only 140 located on Ashen Island.*
Racial Powers: The Ifreanti can use their strong wings to fly with little effort, and also are highly skilled hunters. Legends say that the heroes of the Ifreanti in ancient times could breathe fire, but such legends are scoffed at due to no current Ifreanti having been able to. Their scales also provide protection against most fire and heat, allowing them to live in more inhospitable lands, with less water required.
Racial Reputation: The Ifreanti are currently friendly towards most other races, although they are warlike and will fight for territory without hesitation. Historic conflicts date back to their first meeting with the Empire, which resulted in a decade long war before the first truce was established, and the Zmaj government was established. Only minor disputes have marred their relationship over territory since. The Ifreanti are independent, preferring to keep others outside of their lands. The Ifreanti occasionally sacrifice people into the volcano to honor their god.
Role in the Empire: The Ifreanti who worked with the Empire held positions from diplomats to soldiers, although a large majority chose to stay within the Ifreanti's own territory.
Diet: The Ifreanti are largely carnivorous, although technically omnivores. They bear fangs for teeth in the front of their mouths. Although they do have flatter omnivorous teeth in the back, a salad in Ifreanti culture is as common as a rainbow phoenix.
Ancient Legends: The most common legends speak of the ancient hero Sharrizar, an ancient Ifreanti who rose to power by roaring flames upon his challengers. He led the Ifreanti into a golden age of power, where number were rumored to reach almost 15,000 strong, and the greatest city in their history was built. The legend ends with a massive spell (others call it a natural disaster, a flood, a volcanic eruption, or an invasion) sending the land into chaos, only a few Ifreanti escaping. Some believe this land still exists, far away.
Religion: The Ifreanti believe in an omnipotent fire god, and meditate for an hour every day to reflect on his effect on their lives. In dire situations, they will sacrifice living beings by either burning or casting them into a volcano, for guidance from their god.
Trade/Economy: The Ifreanti were heavily involved in trade prior to recent events, largely exporting Obsidian from lava flows, being one of the few races able to gather it with minor danger. In exchange, they often imported sparser material into their region, such as timber. Fish is considered a rare delicacy in Ifreanti culture, and they will offer extreme prices to acquire it. They still maintain a large wealth from former trading with the Empire and other races.
Racial Weaknesses: The Ifreanti are highly susceptible to the cold, being cold-blooded, and prefer hot, dry climates as a result. Exposure to colder weather results in the Ifreanti growing sluggish. Their wings are also vulnerable, and many Ifreanti will take it as immediate insult to touch their wings without permission.
