Name:The Pachydae of The Tribes
Appearance: Combining the brute strength of their primitive cousins with their highly developed brains, the Pachydae posses a very-human like body, only covered by though grey skin, bulks of muscles and standing, generally, over 8 feet tall. They sport long trunks and powerful tusks.
Numbers: Few hundreds .
Powers: The Pachydae (or Pachyds) live in pure communion with nature, making them able to survive in pretty much any environment through foraging, they also can communicate with beasts, pants and natural I animated objects. Their large brains give them easy understanding of the philosophical and mathematical arts, while their physical constitution make them fearsome warriors
Role: The Pachydae live in small tribes (called Families), with some dozens of individuals in each, scattered through the forests of the south. Each settlement has two figures in command: The Matriarch (The *tribe name* Mother) both governmental and religious head, and The Patriarch (The War Father), a much smaller figure than the mother, only called forth in the days of War. Mostly, the Pachydae avoid conflict or any king of warmongering, but they are really protective towards their family and will not hold back all their might if any kind of threat comes to them. Although some tribes, basically the ones that live nearer "civilization", have a special taste for blood and follow the Patriarch over the Matriach.
Only once on history the families united, during the days of the Weakening (or The Taming as known by the other Imperial races) a great war of annexation of the territory of the Tribes to the Great Empire. If te war had ended in the first years the Pachyd might have had a chance, in those days they used the forests to their favor and they still counted in thousands, they fought in the dark and in the bushes, even the Imperial Wizards couldn't fight their guerrilla. But one day, after years of combat and several losses to the Empire, a fool named Olleron of the Longtusks persuaded the poor men and women of the Pachyds to meet the foreign hordes of the enemy in the field... The Pachyd army was vanquished in hours, for in the field the Empire could muster all it's numbers and death machines. Those who weren't slain were enslaved and in the next day, the Matriarch of All bent her knee to the invaders.
Centuries have passed since the Weakening, the few Pachyds left managed to stabilize their numbers, although never reaching again the glorious numbers of the old days nor the unity of the Tribes. The Imperials lost their interest in the lands but the strength of the people is still craved to labor in cities. A pact was made with the Matriarch to avoid bloodshed and the Pachyds were forced to adapt on of their most sacred and ancient rituals:
The Maturing (or "Gaining our Tusks, as the young ones like to call) a trial, identical for both genders, featuring the test of skills indispensable for the life in a Family, representing their growth to adulthood. In old times those who failed were called the Untusked and condemned as the lowest class of the Pachyd society. Now, they are sent to slavery in the Capital and other cities, a barbaric method indeed, but the only way of preventing the annihilation of their kind by the Empire.
Reputation: The Pachydae are seen as primitive bloodlusting beasts, this being used as a justification for the hate and segregation they suffer. They are actually the opposite.
Diet: Pachyds are herbivorous.
Religion: Before the Taming, the Pachydae believed in the many Gods of the forest. Once the Imperials annexed the Tribes and forced their religion upon the Pachyds, they had to adapt to a kind of religious syncretism, where while looking at the gods forced at them they imagined their own.
Trade: Great part of trade happened between the Families, but those located on the edge of Pachyd lands had a great trade interaction with the other parts if the empire. They exports basically exotic goods, high quality clay from their river beds, wood, agricultural items, tamed animals, herbs and manufactured ink.
Hero: Each tribe has their own separate heroes and legendary rulers. But three are well known by all tribes, all of them winning their names in during the Weakening:
Ludon "One Tusk" of the Brokentusks, who slayed three of the Imperial Wizards with only his hands and trunk, during the Last Stand. He was enslaved by the end of the battle, but after years in exile, he escaped his chains and returned to his tribe. He died in a small rebellion of the Brokentusks after the Imperials tracked him and slew his whole Family.
Ysilla "Mother of the Woods" of the Fruitgrowers, a strong matriarch and shaman, well versed in te ways of the wood. She commanded the guerrilla in the earlie years of the War.
Matriarch Denna, the First All Mother, formerly of the Beastfriends. Even though she is known for bending her knees to the Empire, she is praised for her strength and willingness to protect her people.
And of course there is the infamous villain hated by all and condemner of his Family:
Orellon "The Fool" of the Longtusks, he persuaded the clans to fight the Empire in open field, only to lead them to slaughter. The remnants of the Longtusks are now hated, even more than the Untuskeds.
Weakness: Their eyes are not really well evolved, causing visual defects even in the youngest ones. They are also the most sensible part of the Pachydae's body, many are now to bleed to death from eye wounds.
They also lack the dexterity of other races, for their large hands and trunk, even more dexterous than their hands, are too brutish for many tasks. And they are not stealthy at all.
